Liberty's Karate was founded in 1978 at the Sir Allan MacNab Recreation Centre in Hamilton, Ontario by Sensei John Liberty. This became a very successful club and grew to be a very good size. An oppourtunity came along to open a second school at the Bennetto Recreation Centre. Sensei John Liberty along with Sensei Dale Murchison looked after this second location. Sensei John soon felt that Sensei Murchison was quite capable of running this location on his own and focused on the running of the Sir Allan MacNab location. Along came another oppoutunity to grow, this time it was for Sensei Murchison and the location was Huntington Park Recreation Centre. Sensei Murchison has since branched off and created his own club name "North East Karate".

In 2001 Liberty's Karate underwent a big change. Sensei John Liberty retired from the Martial Arts. He left his club to his most senior active student from the MacNab location, Sensei Jeff Burroughs. In September 2002 Sensei Jeff bought out Bromley's Martial Arts in Waterdown, Ontario. This was as a result of the 2 head Instructors Sensei Mark and Vickie Bromley retiring themselves. To this day both locations are still operating under the Instruction of Sensei Jeff Burroughs and Sensei Justin Doherty.

Sensei Jeff and Sensei Justin are still looking for ways to keep Liberty's Karate strong and growing. 2004 brought the first year that a member of the club represented Canada at the WKA World Championships. Both head instructors are looking to train more students to be able to represent their country at these championships.

2006 brought such an oppourtunity as Liberty's Karate student Kelsey McAleese won a Silver Medal in the WKA Canadian Championships and then went to the World Championships in Spain. There she won a Silver Medal and became the first member of our club to ever place in a World Championship.
